Both sides were against me since the day I was born.....

My outfit ideas start in my head.  Usually, as I'm drifting off to sleep or in the shower, I start mentally removing items from my closet and putting them together.  In my mind's eye I can visualize what it looks like on.  Most of the time, if it looks good in my head, it looks good on.

That's how this outfit came together.  I was in the shower thinking about what I wanted to wear, and I started out with the shirt.  I got this for a couple of dollars last week at a new thrift store I found.  It's a very light denim that looks like it's from the 70s.  I then decided to go for the whole southwest vibe.  I just love that look!  I can see this with boots (cowboy maybe?) and denim jacket as the cooler temperatures take hold!

I'm curious....how do you put together your clothes?  Do you stand at the opening of your closet and start moving things around experimenting?  Does one item go on first and then you start looking around your wardrobe looking for what to put with it?  Are you super organized and plan your outfits for the week?  (I'm in AWE of anyone who can do that!)  I'd love to hear how your creativity works!

  1. I love the accessories here...especially the belt!! Often, the outfits start in my shower or I see something in a magazine or on TV which starts me thinking. I watched Rachel Zoe last night on my DVR and somehow looks on that show led to the outfit I am wearing today. Somehow the shower ends up being for "other thinking!!"

  2. You are just TOO special! Always love the outfits you put together. Patti's too. I've only been blogging for a month but am changing (for the better) so much because of it. What started out as trying to have a better wardrobe with a limited budget, is morphing into changed hair, changed attitude, changed body,(because of changed eating habits) changed motivation. Love you guys!

  3. Thanks Pam! CH, what a sweet comment! Our little blogging neck of the woods is very precious, eh? It's just filled with girls' girls! So glad you jumped in! You've done some amazing things with your sewing....you should give lessons!

  4. Serene~Love this look--and I love franco sarto!!! I think the cowboy boots may be a bit too much country tho!
Sometimes my creativity comes ina flash--sometimes I have to eek it out. Sketching helps me; then sometimes I just hang in my closet and see if my clothes talk to me...kidding! Love ya!

  5. Love the Southwest on you, girlfriend. I am in awe of women who do the week-at-a-time too. Such organization. I usually do the stand in front of the closet thing and wait for the clothes to speak, like Paula : > Oops, they don't???

  6. Paula, now I just feel challenged with the cowboy boots! LOL May have to play with that idea some!

  7. Patti, if they start speaking, just make sure they don't talk over you.....that's just plain rude! Must keep those garments polite! :)

  9. I try to plan my outfits out ahead of time using my inspiration boards but that happens like 2% of the time so for the other 98% of the time I spend a good portion of my morning standing in my closet in my underwear waiting for something to jump out at me. Once I decide on one piece I build the rest of the outfit around that. You put together a fabulous outfit as usual!

  10. At one point in my life, I did plan outfits a week ahead, but now I just go with the flow. Sometimes I start with one outfit than decide it just doesn't feel right and then go for another.
You look really good in this outfit. I love the skirt.

  11. This is great - it has a Southwestern feel without being costume-y and I love that.

As for me, when I think of outfits, I actually write them down and then try to make them happen at some point. Other times I do think of outfits and I'm falling asleep or in the shower. And still other times I get inspiration from whatever is hanging together in the closet. Basically, I'm all over the place and it's a wonder I can dress myself at all!

  12. Serene--it's no secret that I suffer from insomnia. I often compose outfits in my mind as I try to sleep, but sometimes I have to get up and check--not dress, but pair the items together. I can never truly know until I've got it on.

This one is a winner! Can't believe what you paid for the suede skirt.

  13. I lay in bed thinking about outfit combinations. It helps me relax. (I also reimagine the living rooms in my friend's houses! LOL)

I love this outfit!! LOVE! So put together yet casual yet work appropriate!

  14. Your process works!!!! I usually start with the hat and then whatever memory or my gaze provides. Sometime it happens at yoga!

  15. I can't plan outfits, either! I normally pick one piece I want to wear and work around it.

  16. I lay in bed in the morning (or the night before) and mentally sort through my closet and "try things on" in my head. Like you, I usually have a pretty good idea of it it will go together or not. The other great way I put together an outfit: By looking at my clean laundry pile and just picking up two or three items that are next to each other and figuring out a way to wear them together!
    Love the southwest style too!

  17. Lately I use photos as inspiration and try to recreate looks with what I have. In this way I make use of many of my clothes in combinations I 've never could think of. You pulled the denim shirt in a very classic way and very much Serene .

  18. Thanks for dropping by my blog! You've done a really nice take on the southwest vibe. Your necklace and shoes are fantastic.

Believe it or not some outfits have come to me in dreams. (Although sometimes they involve really cool stuff that I don't even own). I keep my closet organized and I find that helps because right away I can see what would go with what

  19. Traditionally, I have "selected" outfits at the last minute, standing in the closet wondering what to wear while running late for work. Sometimes, when I buy something new, I'll spend an hour trying on lots of combinations.

This year, for the first time, because I have less time before work in the morning, I am trying to tentatively plan outfits for the week and then try each one on the night before. We'll see if I can keep it up! Your look is great, Serene, as always!

  20. If I am going somewhere special, I plan the day before, if not I pull it together after showering

  21. Classic, classic and comfortable. I like how you explain the start of your outfits.

My style is usally impulsive. A piece will trigger the ensemble. Everything put together once only, and with a stream of consciousness logic to it. Usually a color or an item will excite a memory and I'll work around that.
