Maybe it's because I'm a child of the 70s/80s, but I just ADORE a glossy lip! I remember as a middle schooler, laquering up my lips and talking to myself in the mirror. I just felt soooooo sophisticated and glamorous and my speech was soooooooo expressive. Okay, so maybe I spent too much time in my imagination when I was a kid, but what can I say? The idea of glamour has always captivated me. And, no matter how you slice it, a glossy lip is just GLAMOROUS!!
Matte lips come and go, but the glossy look never goes out of style!

While Cher would have a difficult time NOT looking fabulous, the glossy lip just sets off her face! |
I think this is my favorite of the bunch! A clean look and a lip that stands out!
I am so with you Serene! I love a glossy lip. Thanks for sharing the great pictures.
ReplyDeleteThanks Pam! Me too!
DeleteAh, I am having a very pleasant flashback seeing the ad for the Maybelline roll-on liquid gloss, which my older sis used to wear in the 70s when we were kids! They were so gooey. We used to buy the Bonnie Bell Lip Smackers (which still exist today, gotta love) in crazy favors like 7up. I live in lipgloss now and have never been hugely attracted to lipstick - I always end up looking like Bobo the Clown in the latter, and a glossy sheer lip, I find, adds volume and makes me look younger (hopefully I'm not deluded in thinking this!). :)
ReplyDeleteHa Ha Grunge! I hope you're not deluded either or else I'm deluded too!! Shiny lips are just so healthy and lush looking to me! Ahhhhh, Bonnie Bell, what memories! I wonder if they even still make the roll on lip gloss? Man, I used to love that!! Now I get my gloss at Bath & Body works....that CG Bigelow stuff....its fabulous!!
DeleteLoving these pictures, Serene! I also find a glossy lip youthful and so pretty. Mine never last very long, but I enjoy the look!
ReplyDeletePatti! I'm right there with you! When I use that CG Bigelow over my lipstick as a gloss, it actually lasts a good while!
DeleteWhat did people use before they invented lip gloss? Great pictures. I like that last one, too - the jewelry looks like it's made from ceramic macaroni.
ReplyDeleteBeryl! I'm thinking they probably licked their lips a lot! Or maybe vaseline?
DeleteI am not going to agree with you on this one hehehe I dislike glossy lips so much on me, I have a very oily face and to have also the liquid feeling of the lipstick it feels like it's too much oil on my face, I can't stand it, I prefer the matte lipstick, at least then some part of my face is matte. =)
ReplyDeleteShey, If I could rock a red matte lip like you, I wouldn't even give lip gloss a second thought! :) That's your signature right there!
DeleteMy favorite Charlie's Angel! She's so gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteBrings back bunch of memories! :)
Isn't she?! And she still looks pretty much the same today!
DeleteNow that I'm 53 yrs old, I'm not a huge fan of lip gloss. I just hate a shiny lip. I don't like a matte look either. I use more of a lipstick that has a moisturizing balmy consistency.
ReplyDeleteMarla, my mom was not a big lip gloss user either....you and she share a similar coloring. She also liked a really creamy lipstick and often went for a nude or even pale lip. It worked for her!
DeleteLOVE the cover with Cher.
ReplyDeleteWendy, Me too! My favorite Cher period was back in the 70s and early 80s.
DeleteI love the glossy lip too, and matte. Or whatever I feel like on a certain day. Gorgeous photos!
ReplyDeleteJudith! The glossy lip looks fabulous on you! In my mind's eye, I'm picturing you donning one of your gorgeous pill box chapeaus and smiling with glossy red lips!
DeleteI had that roll-on lipgloss too, I think in strawberry. Or was it bubblegum? Oh my God I love this post I love vintage ads from any decade but you picked one that is near and dear to my heart! XO, Jill
